My method of pleating clay has me pinching, folding and pressing each small piece of clay, working quickly upwards when making bottles or cylinders, or gently outwards from the centre if working in moulds; planting layer upon layer. Working this way I feel a connection to the finished piece that is enormously satisfying. Whilst some would find this method of working repetitive, I find it soothing and not unlike working on a puzzle. My confidence in the technique allows me to continually explore new forms that work with the surface texture of the clay, and I can play around with the way I lay the pieces of pleated clay. The Southern Ice porcelain I work with is very white and highly translucent. I am continually looking for the best form to show off this translucency and the textural shadows the pleating creates.
